Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he will withdraw from the ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for N600 per litre by Saturday.
Amaechi, who is Atiku’s running mate on the ADC ticket for the 2027 presidential election, made the declaration on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The former Rivers State governor challenged the Tinubu administration to bring down the price of petrol, offering to personally visit a filling station to verify the pump price.
He said: “Tomorrow, if you are doubtful, come with your camera tomorrow in the morning and I will go to a filling station and I will buy fuel.
“If it comes down to N600, I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as the vice presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu.”
Amaechi’s declaration comes amid continuing political debate over the impact of the removal of petrol subsidy on Nigerians and the cost of living.
He criticised the Tinubu administration for removing the subsidy without, in his view, providing sufficient measures to cushion its effects on households.
The former minister also described the 2027 presidential election in stark terms, saying Nigerians faced a choice between “survival and ruin”.
According to him, “Tinubu represents the choice of death.”
Amaechi’s remarks were made while criticising the administration’s economic policies and its handling of the rising cost of living. Channels Television reported that he argued that Nigerians should assess the government by whether its policies had translated into lower prices and improved living conditions.
The ADC had in June announced Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
