Two men suspected of robbery have been beaten to death by an angry mob in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, Vanguard gathered, took place along Ekpo Abasi Street, near Yellow Duke, where the bodies were later abandoned.
The victims, whose identities were yet to be established as of Sunday, attracted a crowd of curious residents before police operatives arrived and evacuated the remains.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Eitokpah, who confirmed the incident, said preliminary findings showed that the two men were apprehended by residents who suspected them of involvement in a robbery before they were attacked.
According to him, police operatives who responded to the scene documented the incident and, with the assistance of local government authorities, evacuated the bodies.
“The remains have been deposited for preservation and identification,” he stated.
The police spokesperson said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased.
He, however, condemned the killing, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
“We urge members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution,” he said.
Police said further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
