The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state from Monday, September 7, 2026, following the detection of suspected diphtheria cases in four Local Government Areas.
The affected areas are Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa LGAs.
The government said the measure was part of efforts to prevent further transmission of the potentially life-threatening bacterial infection and protect pupils, students and school personnel.
The directive, issued under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, on Saturday.
According to the statement, schools that have already resumed academic activities are also required to close from Monday and remain shut until further notice.
The government directed school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply with the directive and ensure that children remain safely at home during the period.
The commissioner said the temporary closure was intended to safeguard the health and wellbeing of students, teaching and non-teaching staff while the government responds to the suspected outbreak.
Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact. It can cause serious complications, particularly among unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated children.
The state government urged all stakeholders to cooperate with public health authorities and follow official guidance as measures are taken to contain the suspected cases.
“The Government appreciates the understanding and full cooperation of all stakeholders as it continues to take appropriate measures in the best interest of the people of Plateau State,” the statement said.
