Former Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, will lead discussions on the media’s role in Nigeria’s quest for a trillion-dollar economy at the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Lagos State Council Annual Lecture.

Peterside, a leadership and management expert, will speak on “Politics, Ports and the Public Interest: The Media’s Catalytic Role in Driving Economic Growth” at the lecture scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

The event, which is part of the NUJ Lagos 2026 Press Week, will hold at 10 a.m. at the Radio Lagos/Eko FM Multipurpose Hall, LTV Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

The former NIMASA helmsman is expected to examine the link between politics, the maritime sector and the media, with particular emphasis on how journalism can contribute to economic growth and national development.

A statement by the Press Week Committee said Peterside would challenge journalists and other stakeholders to examine whether the media could become a stronger catalyst in Nigeria’s drive towards a trillion-dollar economy.

It said: “The lecture is expected to interrogate the triangular relationship between ports as a gateway to economic growth, politics, and the media as a catalyst for national development.”

Peterside’s expertise cuts across leadership, governance, public policy and organisational transformation, while his experience in the maritime sector is expected to add depth to discussions on the blue economy and the role of ports in Nigeria’s economic development.

The annual lecture is one of the major events of the 2026 NUJ Lagos Press Week, scheduled for Monday, September 28, to Sunday, October 4.

Other activities lined up for the week include the Chapel Rendezvous on Thursday, October 1, at 4 p.m. within the LTV premises; Juma’at Service on Friday, October 2, at 1 p.m. at the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja; and the Gala and Awards Night the same day at 4 p.m. at the BOS Hall, LTV Complex, Agidingbi.

The Press Week will end with a Thanksgiving Service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Interdenominational, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja.

The NUJ Lagos State Council urged journalists across the state to participate actively in the activities, saying the Press Week would provide an opportunity for media practitioners to network, exchange ideas, strengthen professional relationships and reflect on the profession’s contribution to society.

The statement was signed by Adewale Akodu, Chairman of the Press Week Committee, and Moses Omorogieva, Secretary.
