The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has launched a probe into the death of a Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, amid allegations of medical negligence during treatment for an asthma attack.

The hospital management announced the probe on Saturday, expressing sadness over Godwin’s death while receiving treatment at its General Medical Practice Unit.

Reports indicate that the student developed breathing difficulties while playing football and was subsequently rushed to the hospital.

A source said to be his colleague alleged that Godwin was still able to walk into the emergency unit on arrival but later suffered a deterioration in his condition.

The source accused medical personnel on duty of failing to provide effective oxygen support, claiming that although oxygen equipment had been placed on the student, the supply was not switched on.

The eyewitness also alleged that the medical team encountered difficulties while attempting to establish intravenous access and secure the student’s airway. The claims have yet to be independently verified.

In a statement signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiola Ajibola, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, the management said the probe would follow established procedures and be conducted thoroughly, impartially and transparently.

“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.

The hospital pledged to cooperate with relevant authorities and stakeholders, urging the public to remain calm and avoid prejudging the outcome.

“While we appreciate the concerns and emotions surrounding this tragic event, we urge the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice to its findings,” the statement added.
