HURIWA urges EFCC, ICPC to examine allegations in $2.1m Abuja land dispute

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to examine allegations arising from a $2.1 million land dispute currently before an FCT High Court.

The case involves Jordan Wike, son of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a claim brought by Safwan Garba GY and GY Global Oil and Gas Nigeria Ltd.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, HURIWA said the nature of the allegations warranted the attention of the relevant authorities.

The organisation stressed, however, that the allegations had not been established and that the court had yet to determine the claims.

Let the Facts Be Established

According to HURIWA, the claimants allege that Jordan Wike was involved in discussions concerning the proposed acquisition of 60 hectares of land in Katampe and Guzape, Abuja.

The claimants further allege that $2.1 million was paid in connection with the proposed transaction and that the deal subsequently did not materialise.

HURIWA said the claimants had made additional allegations concerning the intended beneficiaries of the payment.

The organisation called on the EFCC and ICPC to independently establish the facts surrounding the allegations.

“HURIWA says Nigerians deserve to know whether the agencies are aware of the allegations and, if they are, why they have not commenced a professional investigation to establish the facts,” the statement said.

The group emphasised that its position should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing against any individual.

“HURIWA stresses that it is not pronouncing anyone guilty. The allegations remain allegations, and the court will determine the claims before it,” it said.

Court Orders Production of Passport

The call followed proceedings at an FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, where Justice Sylvanus Oriji directed Jordan Wike to produce his American international passport.

The order was made during the resumed hearing of Suit No. CV/008/2026, filed by Safwan Garba GY and GY Global Oil and Gas Nigeria Ltd.

During cross-examination by counsel to the claimants, Hamza Dantani, Jordan Wike was asked about his whereabouts on September 26, 2025.

He told the court that he was outside Nigeria and said he had travelled with his American passport.

He also indicated that he could produce the passport if required.

Following the response, counsel applied for an order compelling him to produce the document.

Justice Oriji granted the application and directed him to bring the passport to court.

Jordan Wike has denied the allegations contained in the claimants’ case in his statement on oath.

Group Seeks Independent Review

HURIWA urged the EFCC and ICPC, if they consider the matter within their mandates, to establish the source and movement of the funds referenced in the court proceedings and determine whether any aspect of the allegations raises issues requiring investigation.

The organisation also called for any investigation to be conducted professionally and independently.

“The association insists that nobody should be treated as a sacred cow, while nobody should equally be declared guilty before the conclusion of a fair investigation and due process,” HURIWA said.

Jordan Wike was represented in court by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ogwu Onoja, while some documents were tendered through him.

The case was adjourned until September 30, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
