Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term after securing 172 votes out of 181 cast during an election by the United Nations General Assembly last Tuesday.
The Federal Government announced the development in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
According to the statement, Nigeria was elected alongside 14 other countries to serve a three-year term beginning January 1, 2027, and ending December 31, 2029.
The 47-member council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally, as well as addressing human rights violations and strengthening international cooperation on related issues.
The government attributed Nigeria’s election to international confidence in the country’s commitment to advancing human rights and improving human rights conditions globally.
It also expressed appreciation to United Nations member states for supporting Nigeria’s candidature.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses its appreciation to UN Member States for their support for Nigeria’s candidature,” the statement said.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect with other member states.
The government also pledged to work closely with other council members to advance the council’s mandate and strengthen international efforts towards the promotion and protection of human rights.
It further reiterated its commitment to constructive multilateral engagement and support for initiatives that uphold human dignity, justice and respect for fundamental freedoms.
Nigeria’s three-year membership is scheduled to begin in January 2027, when it will join other elected members in addressing human rights concerns and promoting international cooperation on the protection of fundamental rights.
