President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran journalist and diplomat, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, describing him as a distinguished public servant who devoted his life to national service.

Cole died at the age of 86.

In a tribute titled “Farewell to Ambassador Dele Cole, Distinguished Diplomat, Journalist and Public Servant,” Tinubu said the late statesman made significant contributions to journalism, diplomacy and politics.

The President said Cole’s career exemplified the importance of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in promoting national development and international cooperation.

He particularly highlighted Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media industry, noting that his tenure as managing director of the Daily Times reflected the critical role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power and strengthening democratic governance.

“His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story,” Tinubu said.

The President added that Cole witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the country’s development through his work in the media, diplomacy and public service.

According to him, the late diplomat’s life demonstrated the value of experience, principled engagement and commitment to the public good.

Tinubu extended his condolences to Cole’s family, friends, professional associates and others affected by his death, expressing hope that memories of his remarkable life would bring them comfort and strength.

He also prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for God to grant his family and other mourners the fortitude to bear the loss.
