President Bola Tinubu has assented to a bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna, in a move aimed at expanding technical education, vocational training and skills development in Nigeria.
The development was disclosed by the member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on House Services, Daniel Amos, who said the conversion would widen access to higher education, strengthen research and equip graduates with practical skills needed in the labour market.
The legislation, sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, repeals the law establishing the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, and replaces it with the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.
Amos commended Abbas for sponsoring the bill, saying the Speaker’s leadership demonstrated a commitment to education and national development.
“Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership on this bill demonstrates purposeful commitment to education and national development,” he said.
He also thanked Tinubu for assenting to the legislation, describing the development as a boost to educational reform and human capital development under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to Amos, the new university status would provide a platform for expanding degree programmes, strengthening research capacity and improving technical and vocational education.
He said the institution would be better positioned to produce graduates with the practical and technological skills required to support Nigeria’s industrial growth and meet changing labour market demands.
Amos also disclosed that Tinubu had assented to the bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos, also sponsored by Abbas.
He congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former polytechnic, on the development.
The lawmaker expressed optimism that the conversion would improve access to university education in Kaduna State and neighbouring communities while strengthening technical and vocational training.
The upgrade is expected to create opportunities for expanded academic programmes and research, with a focus on developing skilled manpower to meet Nigeria’s technological and industrial needs.
