The incumbent Senator representing Zamfara North Senatorial District, Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u Kaura, has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the forthcoming general election after recording a decisive victory in the party’s senatorial primary.
Ya’u Kaura polled 49,176 votes to defeat two other aspirants, Alhaji Tijjani Yahaya, who scored 9,628 votes, and Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, who secured 2,602 votes.
The results were announced on Monday in Gusau by the Chairman of the APC Senatorial Primary Elections Committee for Zamfara North, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu.
Aliyu said three aspirants contested the primary, which was conducted across the four local government areas making up the senatorial district.
Declaring the incumbent senator winner, the committee chairman said Ya’u Kaura had satisfied the requirements of the APC constitution and guidelines governing the exercise.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and the guidelines of the APC, Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u is hereby declared the winner of the Zamfara North Senatorial District primary election,” he said.
He explained that the declaration followed the collation of votes recorded during the exercise in line with the party’s electoral procedures.
The committee also commended party members and supporters for what it described as their discipline, restraint and maturity throughout the primary election.
Meanwhile, the announcement of Ya’u Kaura’s victory sparked celebrations among his supporters in Gusau and other communities across the senatorial district.
Supporters reportedly took to the streets and gathered in Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Zurmi and Birnin Magaji Local Government Areas to celebrate the outcome.
The victory positions the incumbent senator as the APC’s candidate for the Zamfara North senatorial seat, as the party prepares for the forthcoming general election.
