A newborn baby has been rescued after being found abandoned in a wrapper inside an uncompleted building along Layin Majema Street, off Ring Road, in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred barely a week after another newborn baby was found abandoned in a bush around Naraguta community, also in Jos North LGA, raising fresh concerns over the increasing cases of newborn abandonment in the area.

The latest baby, who was reportedly found with the umbilical cord still attached and covered in blood, was rescued by two residents, Ibrahim Muhammad Alfa Dan Agaji and his friend, Salim Alhassan Zaranda.

It was gathered that the duo discovered the baby after hearing cries from the roadside near Chemist din Yawo.

Narrating the incident, Ibrahim said they were passing through the area when they suddenly heard a baby crying, prompting them to investigate the source of the sound.

He said they discovered a newborn wrapped in a cloth, with the umbilical cord still attached.

According to him, the baby appeared to be in stable condition, prompting them to immediately provide aid.

Ibrahim further disclosed that some residents claimed to have seen a woman suspected to be the baby’s mother abandon the child before fleeing the scene on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as an okada.

He said the baby had been taken to Angwan Rogo Police Station for proper documentation and necessary intervention.
