The Lagos State Police Command has disarmed and detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following the fatal shooting of a young girl, Omole Taiwo, and the injury of another in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., when police operatives were deployed to the area to contain a violent clash between two rival groups, identified as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, over toll collection.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, explaining that members of the rival groups were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when police operatives moved in to restore order.
According to her, during the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullets struck the two girls.
Both victims were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency treatment. However, Taiwo was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead.
The second victim remains hospitalised and is said to be in stable condition.
Expressing deep sorrow over the death of the young girl, the police said the officer involved had been disarmed and detained, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.
The Command said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine appropriate legal and disciplinary actions against anyone found culpable.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, has visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assure them that justice would be served.
Fatai reportedly pledged that no police officer found responsible for the incident would be shielded from accountability.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, professionalism and the protection of human life, the Command urged members of the public with useful information to report to the nearest police station or its Public Relations Department.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of civilians during police operations, particularly in communities affected by violent clashes and criminal activities.
