The Ebonyi State Government has arrested 30 suspected sex workers and sealed a guest house in Abakaliki over alleged security concerns, the discovery of substances suspected to be hard drugs and building approval violations.
The operation was carried out by the state Ministry of Capital City and Urban Planning in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Security, security operatives and members of the ministry’s task force.
The Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Planning, Hon. Richard Ugo Idike, who spoke during an inspection of the facility, expressed concern over activities allegedly taking place at the guest house, which he said raised questions about public safety and security.
Idike disclosed that substances suspected to be hard drugs, including wrappers allegedly containing substances locally known as Colos and Indian hemp, were recovered during the operation. Security operatives subsequently took charge of the suspected substances for further investigation.
He said the operation also uncovered a building being used as a guest house without the necessary approval, stressing that the state government would not tolerate the use of unapproved buildings for activities that could compromise public safety.
The commissioner urged property developers and building owners to obtain the required building approvals from the ministry before commencing construction, warning that the government would enforce compliance with approved development plans.
He subsequently ordered the indefinite sealing of the facility pending clarification of the circumstances surrounding its operation and compliance with the ministry’s requirements. The owner was also directed to appear before the ministry to explain the situation and resolve outstanding issues.
The Commissioner for Internal Security, Hon. Prince Etta Uka Ude, said his ministry was focused on protecting residents and maintaining security across the state.
Ude warned that the government would not tolerate the use of business premises as cover for criminal activities, adding that security agencies had been urged to intensify surveillance of establishments suspected of engaging in illegal operations, particularly in Abakaliki.
He also emphasised the need for cooperation among government agencies, security operatives and residents to identify and address potential security threats.
The commissioners said the operation was part of the state government’s efforts to enforce building regulations, safeguard public safety and maintain law and order under Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.
As of the time of filing this report, the 30 arrested individuals had reportedly been taken into police custody for further investigation, while the owner of the guesthouse had yet to be arrested.
