The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its longstanding defence and security partnership with Nigeria, with renewed emphasis on military cooperation, professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

The commitment was reiterated when the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Pete Vowles, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed the development, noting that the engagement underscored the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening bilateral defence relations and enhancing operational effectiveness.

During the meeting, Vowles expressed appreciation for the enduring political, diplomatic and military ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, describing defence and security cooperation as a critical pillar of the bilateral relationship.

The British envoy also reaffirmed his determination to sustain existing security initiatives and explore new opportunities for collaboration in response to evolving regional and global security challenges.

He emphasised the importance of a strong, mutually beneficial partnership capable of promoting regional stability and strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to tackle contemporary security threats.

Responding, General Oluyede highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting that both countries have maintained a productive defence relationship over several decades while working together to address shared security concerns.

The CDS stressed the need to sustain and expand existing areas of cooperation, particularly in professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

According to him, ongoing defence agreements and training programmes have contributed to improving the professional competence and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Oluyede further noted that continued engagement with strategic international partners remains essential to strengthening the military’s ability to respond effectively to emerging threats.

He said such cooperation would also support Nigeria’s drive towards greater self-reliance, institutional resilience and operational efficiency.

Both Countries Reaffirm Commitment to Security Cooperation

Both parties expressed optimism about the future of the UK-Nigeria defence and security partnership, pledging to build on existing achievements and identify additional areas of cooperation for mutual benefit.

The renewed commitment comes amid the importance of international defence partnerships in strengthening military professionalism, improving operational capabilities and supporting regional security efforts.

The engagement is expected to provide further opportunities for Nigeria and the United Kingdom to consolidate their longstanding military relationship through training, institutional development and strategic cooperation.
