Unidentified gunmen have killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and seriously injured another during a routine surveillance patrol in the Tunga Taya–Woro axis of Niger State.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Akinlabi said the attack occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on October 6, 2026, when two personnel attached to the Service’s Wawa Control Post were conducting routine surveillance in the area.

The deceased officer was identified as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I, I.U. Babangida, while his colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape.

Musa is currently receiving medical attention, according to the statement.

The Service said Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, describing his death as a painful loss.

“The Service honours his sacrifice and unwavering commitment to duty,” Akinlabi said.

The NIS extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.

It also assured both families of its continued support and assistance during the difficult period.

On efforts to apprehend the attackers, the Service said it was working with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible.

It vowed to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to justice.

Despite the attack, the NIS reaffirmed its commitment to securing the nation’s borders, saying the incident would not deter it from carrying out its responsibilities.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains undeterred by this unfortunate incident and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders,” the statement added.
