The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has welcomed the approval of the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, providing for a dual policing system, by 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The group said the approvals met the constitutional threshold of two-thirds of the 36 states required for the amendment to proceed.
In a statement, its Chairman and Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, commended the State Houses of Assembly for supporting the reform and acknowledged the National Assembly’s passage of the amendment in both chambers.
“In line with Section 9 of the Constitution, the amendment can now be returned to the National Assembly for transmission to Mr President for assent,” Gbajabiamila said.
He explained that the approval provided the constitutional backing for the policing framework that the Working Group’s draft National Policing Bill, 2026, is intended to implement.
Gbajabiamila said work on the proposed legislation remained on course, adding that the draft bills were undergoing legislative drafting review and validation at the Federal Ministry of Justice.
He said the bills were expected to be returned to the Working Group on or before Friday, October 30, 2026, for final consideration before presentation to the President.
The Working Group urged stakeholders to support a smooth transition to a dual policing system aimed at improving public safety across the country.
