The Lagos State Police Command has detained four officers attached to the Imota Tactical Team in Ikorodu over the alleged harassment of a young man in the Odogunyo area of the community.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Olaiya, has also disbanded the tactical team following the emergence of a viral video showing some of its personnel allegedly harassing the young man.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists on the development.
Adebisi said the command launched an investigation immediately after the video surfaced, leading to the identification of the officers involved.
“Immediately we got the video, we investigated and the men were identified to be personnel of the Lagos State Police Command,” she said.
She explained that the officers were summoned to the Commissioner of Police’s office on Thursday and detained pending disciplinary proceedings.
“They are presently here at the headquarters for further inquiries, and I want to assure members of the public that we will take appropriate actions against them,” she added.
Adebisi said three of the officers were present at the command headquarters during the briefing, while the fourth officer, who was also in custody, was not presented to journalists for reasons she did not disclose.
The police spokesperson said the action reflected the command’s position against impunity and its commitment to ensuring that officers discharge their duties with integrity and humility.
According to her, Olaiya had directed personnel to uphold these principles from his first day in office.
“No uniform is a licence to intimidate, harass, or violate the rights of any citizen. The uniform is a symbol of service, trust, and responsibility, and anyone who abuses that trust must be prepared to face the consequences,” Adebisi said.
She assured residents that no officer would be shielded from accountability if found culpable, adding that the command remained committed to protecting citizens’ rights.
Adebisi urged residents to report police personnel who violate the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, stressing that public cooperation was essential to effective policing.
She also commended members of the community for helping the police identify the officers involved.
