The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has formally adopted President Bola Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, signalling a major political alignment ahead of the polls.

Anambra State Governor and APGA National Leader, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, announced the party’s decision during the flag-off of its nationwide election campaign at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, where more than 253 candidates contesting various elective positions across the country were unveiled.

Soludo said the decision to support Tinubu was driven by the need for progressive political forces to work together, insisting that the endorsement was consistent with APGA’s political history.

He recalled that the party had similarly adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 and 2015 presidential elections, arguing that its decision to back Tinubu in 2027 followed the same political tradition.

“Today, as we unveil our campaign as the foremost progressive party in Nigeria, we are also officially adopting President Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of APGA.

“We did it in 2011 and 2015 for President Jonathan. We are repeating it in 2027 because progressives are working together to support a President who loves Ndi Igbo and Ndi Anambra,” Soludo declared.

The governor anchored the endorsement partly on what he described as the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the South-East.

He specifically pointed to the dualisation and rehabilitation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, among other federal projects, as evidence of the need for the region to engage strategically with the Tinubu administration.

Soludo urged voters in the South-East to look beyond political sentiments and consider tangible benefits, enlightened self-interest and strategic political partnerships when making their choices in 2027.

He argued that political decisions should be guided by practical considerations about what would advance the interests of the region rather than emotional attachments.

The governor also challenged APGA candidates and party faithful to take the campaign to the grassroots through aggressive door-to-door mobilisation.

He promised to personally join the candidates in soliciting votes, expressing confidence that the party would perform strongly in the forthcoming elections.

Soludo urged the electorate to distinguish between reason and emotion as preparations intensify for the January 16 and February 6, 2027 elections.

As part of the campaign launch, the governor presented party flags to 44 APGA candidates contesting legislative positions in Anambra State.

The candidates comprise three senatorial hopefuls, 11 House of Representatives candidates and 30 candidates for the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Earlier, APGA National Chairman, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, commended Soludo for what he described as transparent and competitive party primaries conducted in accordance with electoral laws.

Ezeokenwa attributed the growing interest in APGA to Soludo’s people-oriented policies, maintaining that Anambra remained the party’s political stronghold.

He expressed optimism that the party would secure a decisive victory in the forthcoming elections.

The campaign flag-off marks an early effort by APGA to consolidate its political structure nationwide, strengthen its grassroots presence and mobilise support for its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
