The Chairman of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Hon. Sharehu Abubakar Kamarawa, has launched a free medical outreach to provide healthcare support to residents amid an outbreak of an unidentified disease in the area.

The intervention is aimed at easing access to medical services for affected communities, particularly low-income households, elderly residents and other vulnerable groups who may struggle to afford consultation, medication and other essential healthcare services.

Kamarawa said the initiative was prompted by the need to protect lives and ensure that financial difficulties did not prevent residents from receiving medical attention during the public health emergency.

“The decision to initiate this free medical outreach is borne out of our concern for the health and well-being of our people. At a time like this, no resident should be denied access to medical care because of a lack of money,” the chairman said.

He explained that the programme was designed to provide immediate medical assistance, reduce the financial burden on affected families and complement wider efforts to respond to the outbreak.

The chairman added that the local government would continue to work with relevant health authorities and other stakeholders to monitor the situation, assess emerging needs and implement appropriate interventions.

Kamarawa urges early reporting of symptoms

Kamarawa called on residents to remain calm, observe official preventive measures and seek medical attention promptly if they developed symptoms associated with the outbreak.

He cautioned against ignoring warning signs or relying solely on self-medication, particularly when symptoms persisted or worsened.

The chairman also urged community members to cooperate with healthcare personnel, follow public health advisories and report suspected cases to the appropriate authorities to support timely assessment and response.

He stressed that effective disease control required cooperation among government agencies, healthcare workers, community leaders, families and residents.

According to him, public awareness and early reporting were important to helping health authorities identify cases and determine the appropriate response.

Vulnerable households to benefit

The free medical outreach is expected to provide relief to families facing financial difficulties, as illness can disrupt livelihoods, increase household expenses and place additional pressure on already limited resources.

However, the disease has yet to be identified in the information provided for this report, and no details were available on the number of suspected cases, symptoms, affected communities or the specific medical services being offered through the programme.

Further information from relevant health authorities will be important in clarifying the nature and extent of the outbreak and the measures required to contain it.

Kamarawa reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving access to healthcare and responding to public health challenges in Isa Local Government Area.

He urged eligible residents to take advantage of the free medical services and cooperate with health officials, maintaining that protecting public health required timely intervention and collective responsibility.
