Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has taken Nigeria’s electoral concerns to European Union (EU) ambassadors, urging the international community to defend Nigerians’ democratic rights and support efforts to ensure credible elections in 2027.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, made the appeal during a meeting with ambassadors of EU member countries in Abuja, where he raised concerns over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, governance challenges and the integrity of the forthcoming general elections.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate called on the international community to pay close attention to developments in Nigeria, insisting that the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders must be protected.
He maintained that the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend largely on whether Nigerians were allowed to determine their political future without interference or manipulation.
At the meeting, discussions reportedly centred on the rising cost of living, citizens’ welfare, democratic accountability, governance and the need to safeguard the electoral process.
Obi urged the European representatives to support Nigerians in their quest for an electoral process that genuinely reflects the will of the electorate.
He stressed that respect for democratic rights remained fundamental to credible elections and the stability of democratic institutions.
The engagement forms part of a series of diplomatic consultations by the NDC presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
It followed his November 5 meeting with the British High Commissioner, suggesting an expanding diplomatic outreach focused on Nigeria’s political direction, economic difficulties and democratic future.
Obi expressed appreciation to the European Commission for providing the platform to engage representatives of EU member states on issues affecting Nigeria and its citizens.
His latest diplomatic engagement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the NDC candidate placing electoral credibility, economic welfare and accountable governance at the centre of his political message.
For Obi, the challenge ahead is not merely about who wins the 2027 elections, but whether the process gives Nigerians the freedom to decide who governs them.
