Senate President Godswill Akpabio has rejected calls for President Bola Tinubu to formally transfer power to Vice President Kashim Shettima, insisting that the President remains in charge despite his continued stay abroad.
Akpabio said there was no leadership vacuum in the country and no need for Shettima to assume presidential powers while Tinubu is away on what the Presidency has described as a working vacation.
The Senate President spoke in Akwa Ibom State while commissioning road projects executed by Governor Umo Eno.
His comments came amid renewed debate over whether Tinubu should transmit power to the Vice President in line with constitutional provisions governing the President’s absence from the country.
In a statement by his Media Office, Akpabio said Tinubu was still performing his duties as President and remained fully in control of government affairs.
“I am the Senate President, and I am not the acting President of Nigeria, because President Tinubu is still in power. He is on a working leave, and there is no absence in Aso Rock,” Akpabio said.
