Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged residents of the state to shun violence, division and intolerance as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
Yusuf made the call on Thursday while addressing residents at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The governor urged citizens to uphold peace, unity and mutual respect, warning against actions capable of threatening the stability of the state during the election period.
“As the 2027 General Election is fast approaching, I also appeal to you all to continue to uphold peace, unity, and mutual respect. Let us shun violence and anything that may threaten the peace and stability of our dear state,” he said.
He also called on residents to exercise their civic responsibilities responsibly and pray for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections.
Yusuf said the responsibility of maintaining peace should not be left to the government and security agencies alone, stressing that citizens, traditional rulers, religious leaders, communities and other stakeholders all have important roles to play.
The governor urged residents to reject criminality and embrace lawful enterprise and responsible citizenship.
He said his administration would continue to support security agencies operating in the state with logistics and other assistance to help protect lives and property.
According to him, the government has also strengthened grassroots security coordination in communities facing security challenges, with the aim of restoring confidence and enabling residents to return to their farms and normal economic activities.
Yusuf said his administration would remain focused on consolidating its programmes in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, security and human capital development.
He urged the people of Kano to work with the government and other stakeholders towards building a peaceful and prosperous state.
“As we mark this 66th Independence Anniversary, let us renew our faith in Nigeria, uphold peace and unity, and contribute our share towards building a stronger, more prosperous and united nation,” the governor said.
